Wanted The Perfect Pet

For one of our last picture book blogs we will be doing is ”Wanted The Perfect Pet” by Fiona Robertson. This book is about a boy who really wanted the perfect pet even though he already had a lot of turtles. The first connection that I had to this book was when the boy wanted a dog for a pet. This reminds me of last summer when I was begging my mom and dad for another dog. The second connection that I had was another text to self connection. When the dog slash duck showed up at the boys house reminded me of the time that there was a lost dog and the dog was sitting in my yard. The third connection that I had was a text to world connection. When the duck dressed up as a dog reminds me of every halloween when people all over the world dress up. This book was kind of hard to find connections with but it was still a pretty good book.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

For our picture book blog today we did the book “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind”. This book is written by William Kamkwamba and it is illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon. This book is about a African boy named William. Williams family is very poor and so they can’t afford to send william to school. William sees this book about science and he learned how to build a windmill. So he did build one and gave his family some electricity and some electricity to the little town that he lived in. A connection that I had to this book was a text to media connection. The connection that I had was that in the book Williams family can’t afford to send him to school. This reminds me of the time we watched the documentary about how Oprah sent a whole bunch of African girls to school. The second connection that I had was a text to self connection. In the book William builds a windmill, this reminds me of all the times we had to build things in adst. The last connection that I had was a text to world connection. In the book William lives in a really poor town in Africa called Malawi. There are a lot of poor towns in africa who need more sources but can’t get them. This was a very interesting book.

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art

The book that we are reading and are making connections today is called “The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art”. This book is written by Barb Rosenstock and it is illustrated by Mary Grandpre. This book is about a little boy from Russia who got a paint box that sang to him. He was very good at painting abstract but nobody thought that abstract art was good. So he started to paint actual things. This did not bring him joy so he went to law school. He realized that this didn’t bring him joy so he went back to painting. He taught lots of people about abstract and that is how it became so popular. One of the connections that I had with this book was a text to self connection. When he was painting this reminds me of when I went to the Moma in New York City over spring break. The next two connections that I had were text to text connections and text to world connection. The text to text connection is that this book kind of reminds me of one of the book that we read in class before about colours. The text to world connection is that the boy is from Russia and people talk about Russia a lot these days. This book was very interesting and it made me inspired to paint.

There

“There”  written and illustrated by Marie – Louise Fitzpatrick is the name of the book that we did for our picture book blog today. This book is about a little kid who is wondering what it will be like when you get there. The kid is also wondering how he will be able to get there. I had two connections to this book, one was a text to self connection, and the other connection was a text to text connection. The text to self connection was when the kid was wondering when he will get there and how he would get there. This reminds me of when I went to London and Rome and I was wondering how long it would take to get there and how I would get there. The other connection that I had was a text to text connection. The part in the book where the kid was wondering how to train a dragon reminded me of a book that I used to read a lot when I was a little kid. The books name was “The Paper Bag Princess” and it was about a little kid and there friend that was a dragon. I really liked this book because it was really deep and you could leave your mind imagining what he was talking about. I really enjoyed this book.

Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story From Africa

Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story From Africa is the name of the book we did for our second picture book blog of term three. This book is written and illustrated by Jeanette Winter. This book is about a girl named Wangari who really cares about the environment. So she decides to plant a whole bunch of trees. The government doesn’t like that she is doing this. This doesn’t stop her though. One of the connections I had with this book is a text to world connection because the environment and global warming is a big topic of discussion in the world right now. The second connection I had was a text to media connection. This book reminds me a lot of the news because they talk about global warming a lot. The third connection I had was self to text connection because last summer In was driving through Kelowna after all of the fire was gone and I saw so many forests that were missing their trees because they have burnt down. This book really opened my eyes and showed that if you put your mind to something it can happen.

The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau

“The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau” written and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino is the book we did for our first picture book blog of the third term. This book is about a man who was very weak when he was a little boy. Doctors told him to swim a lot because that would build up his strength. One day when he was older he was in a bed car accident and was told that he would have to wear arm braces for the rest of his life. Jacques said no. One day he borrowed some goggles from a friend. He had never realized how pretty under the water was. So Jacques decided to create scuba gear. Jacques became very famous and very rich. The first connection I had to this book was a text to world connection.  In the book the oceans were starting to get polluted. The oceans polluting is a big topic in the world right now. The second connection I had was a text to self connection. I remember when I was in hawaii and I went underwater with goggles for the first time I was amazed too just like Jacques. The third connection I had was a text to text connection because I have read about Jacques before in lot’s of books. The last connection I had was a text to media connection. I have a text to media connection because I have watched different clips of Jacques Cousteau’s tv show before. Jacques Cousteau spent his time exploring different types of underwater creatures and saving the oceans.

Enemy Pie Connections

There are many connections between my life and the book “Enemy Pie”. Enemy Pie written by Derek Munson is a book a about a boy who has a enemy so he talks to his dad about it. The boy’s dad tells the boy to go spend the day with his enemy. The boy and his enemy had a great day together and they decide to not be enemies any more. The first connection I have to this book is a text to self connection. The connection I had was to the part where the two boys are riding their bikes around the neighborhood. This reminds me of the time my friend Sienna and I went bike riding around our neighborhood. The second connection I had was a text to world connection. I think that this book connects to the world a lot right now because there are a lot of enemies in the world at this point in time. The last connection I made was another text to self connection. In the book the boy and his dad were making a pie, this reminds of the time I made a pie with my dad. The only difference is that the boy thought that it was a poisonous pie and my dad and I’s pie was not poisonous. These are a few of many connections I had to the book Enemy Pie.

Sir Cumference and The Dragon of Pi

“Sir Comference and The Dragon of Pi: A Math Adventure” written Cindy Neuschwander and illustrated Wayne Geehan is the name of the book we read for our last picture book blog this term. This book is a great for kids who are learning how to measure the circumference of a  circle. This book starts off with a king and his son laying under a tree when the king gets sick. He asks his sun, Radius to go get him some medicine. Radius couldn’t find a doctor but he found some medicine that he thought would work. Sir Cumference took the medicine but it turned him into a fire breathing dragon. He asks Radius to go get him some medicine so that he will be human again. The guards see that there is a dragon and they plan to slay the dragon in the morning. Radius goes all over the castle looking for a cure and he then learns how to measure the circumference of a circle. Radius measures his father as soon as the army is about to slay his father. Sir Cumference thanks Radius a lot and they all go back to the castle to celebrate and eat pie. This was a good book to on our last picture book blog this term.

Kindness #5

For my last act of kindness I was walking a bit ahead of my friend Elena and I noticed she was holding and dropping a lot of things. I chose this act of kindness because I saw that she was really struggling and I wanted to help her. This act of kindness made me feel really good and Elena said it made her feel really grateful and happy that I saw her struggling. This is my last act of kindness but I am definitely going to be thinking about what acts of kindness I can do around my community.

Kindness #4

For my second last act of kindness I put on and folded lots of laundry for my mom so that she could watch the Oscars last night. I chose this act of kindness because she does a lot for me and my family. This made me feel really warm inside but it also made me feel grateful. My act of kindness also made my mom feel really grateful for me because she got to watch the oscars which is one of her favourite award shows ever. I can’t wait to see what my next act of kindness is going to be.
